Silhouette Medical, Inc. (Prunedale, California) was established in 2001. Its initiative was to develop minimally invasive technologies that would treat individuals who are considered overweight or obese (BMI's of between 25-39) by addressing health and/or personal perception concerns. Through appetite suppression and modification of the stomach's geometry, the Silhouette product and procedure induces controlled weight loss that is sustainable over many years. Unique to Silhouette, the patent pending nObese device and procedure do not employ an implant nor do they involve surgical incisions or stapling of tissue.
In fact, the procedure is carried out in an outpatient setting under conscious sedation. The approximate 45 minute procedure allows the treated individual to resume their normal activities within one day. Post-operatively, one is able to eat as they normally would but their appetite response has been minimized whereby they proportionally eat less. Satiety or the feeling of fullness is achieved rapidly. Additionally, since the stomach has been treated and not the small intestines, absorption of all essential nutrients are unaffected.
The primary key to losing weight is eating fewer calories. The Silhouette solution is truly a minimally invasive procedure that directly addresses how much one eats. However, this does not mitigate the need to eat a healthy diet as prescribed by leading authorities in the health field.
By eating less (and better, healthier food), research clearly demonstrates that the following conditions (but not limited to) are minimized or eliminated (BOLD type indicates conditions with the highest economic impact to society):
- TYPE 2 DIABETES*
- CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
- STROKE
- HYPERTENSION
- Hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, glucose intolerance
- Congestive heart failure
- Fatty liver disease
- Sleep apnea
- Asthma & other respiratory problems
- Uric acid nephrolithiasis (kidney stones)
- Female disorders
* It has been demonstrated that a small decrease in weight gain can eliminate the onset of Type II diabetes. (Currently, approximately 90% of all diabetics are Type II with the remaining 10% defined as Type I.)
Silhouette Medical plans on commencing commercial launch internationally in the latter half of 2010 and approximately a year later (latter half of 2011) in the United States.
